BurkeECO
Paper-Based Marketing
At Burke, we wanted to do more than simply follow environmental regulations. As we do in all areas of our business, we wanted to take it a step further. Most of the green initiatives we have implemented are not enforced by our municipality, but instead, formulated by and passionately enforced by our team here at Burke.
Plastic-Free Marketing
Around the world, people are recognizing the urgent need to reduce plastic consumption and mitigate its impact on the environment and our oceans. At Burke, we’re proud to be at the forefront of this movement by offering innovative paper-based packaging and marketing solutions.
Unlike 100% recyclable paper, plastic can’t be absorbed back into the environment and the amount of plastic in the ocean continues to grow — affecting wildlife and humans alike. Most scientists estimate that 8 million metric tons of plastic end up in our oceans each year — adding to the estimated 150 million metric tons that already exist in our oceans.
With BurkeECO, our goal is to promote the benefits of paper-based marketing and the detrimental effects plastics have on the environment. Our first step in initiating change is to say thank you. We understand that every action we take can make a difference, and we’re committed to doing our part to protect the planet for future generations. By partnering with us, you can join the growing community of businesses that are leading the charge towards a sustainable future.
Did You Know?
A whopping 91% of plastic isn’t recycled.
Of the 8.3 billion metric tons that have been produced, 6.3 billion metric tons have become plastic waste. Of that, only 9% has been recycled.
Our Environmental Business Practices
BurkeECO is our commitment to continue doing business in ways that are good for our community and the planet. Being environmentally friendly is a responsibility we must all take on.
Aluminum plates
All used plates are collected by our licensed waste carrier and 100% recycled.
Paper
Any waste (albeit a considerably low percentage) is recycled into pulp for conversion into low-grade paper.
Cardboard
Recycled into low-grade paper.
Printing Blankets
Rubber blankets are shredded and converted into the surface of children’s playgrounds.
Lighting
We have replaced our fluorescent and halogen factory lighting with LED motion sensors to further reduce power requirements.
Wooden Pallets
Our vendors reuse most of the pallets that are supplied to Burke. Broken pallets are collected and broken down for fuel.
Packaging Reduction
By working with our suppliers, we have slashed our packaging footprint. This initiative has reduced 20,047 square feet of cardboard and over 1 acre of plastic going to landfills each year.
Chemical Management
All waste water and chemicals are sent to a Chemical Waste Management company where they are disposed of or recycled.
The Myth
Paper production is a major cause of global greenhouse gas emissions.
The Fact:
Most of the energy we use is renewable. In addition, our carbon footprint is surprisingly low with about 0.5% of the total U.S. CO2e emissions reported in 2016. We use eco-friendly inks and paper, water-based coatings, and low energy machinery to ensure our manufacturing and products are as environmentally sustainable as possible.
